Written in 1894 and originally published in March of 1896 in The Idler Magazine.
Best known for his books The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man, H.G. Wells had a prolific career as an author. So much so that Jules Verne dubbed him “the father of science fiction”.
While he usually explored the world of sci-fi stories, this story finds him exploring a good old fashioned haunted house, ghost story. Horror in short fiction form.
