The Many Names of Christ
When Moses was in the desert keeping his father in law’s sheep, he experienced one of the most dramatic events in the Bible. He saw the burning bush. The Lord introduces himself to Moses:
2 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.
4 And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
(Exodus 3:2-6)
Moses asks the Lord’s name:
3 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
14 And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.
15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.
Exodus 3:13-15
From that time on Christ has been known as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, and the Great I Am.
Through the ages, speaking to his Prophets God revealed his nature through his many names. He is defined by his names. We must remember that Moses was raised in the palace of Pharoah by the Pharoah’s daughter. He knew every idol of Egypt. In a moment Moses is taught that there is only one God, The Great I AM, and monotheism is born, or I should say reborn for the Children of Israel had fallen into apostasy.
By studying the names of Christ revealed through His prophets we can get to know him better. As you hear the following names, preface it with the phrase I Am. Consider all the names of Christ as a definition of I Am. Who can hear the following lines of Isaiah without thinking of Handel’s Messiah?
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
Now preface it with “I Am called Wonderful.” “I am called Counsellor.” “I am The Mighty God.” “I Am The Everlasting Father.” “I Am the Prince of Peace.” Do that with all the names that follow.
Isaiah also refers to Christ as the God of Jacob, the Lord of Hosts, the Holy One of Israel, the root of Jesse, and Jehovah. Jesus revealed to Isaiah, “I am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.”. Again Isaiah says, “For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.”
