Keep Your Eyes On The Prize: Dr. Makkouk of Austin Eye Center On the Link Between Vision and Major Health Concerns
Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there.
In this segment, Dr. Lucas Jacomides and Donna Lee are joined by special guest and friend of the show, ophthalmologist Dr. Fuad Makkouk of Austin Eye Center in north Austin. Today, Dr. Makkouk explains why problems with the eye are so often connected to chronic health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and even erectile dysfunction. A common denominator in these and other health conditions is vascular health. The blood vessels in the eye are the same size as those in the kidney, so it is no surprise that diabetes can have adverse effects on the eyes. Damage to blood vessels in the eyes can point right back to undiagnosed issues like heart disease and erectile dysfunction, both of which are conditions that can be caused by lack of blood flow due to damaged or blocked veins. Similarly, high blood pressure can cause tremendous strain on the blood vessels in the eyes and potentially damage them. For patients with diabetes, Dr. Makkouk recommends annual eye screenings. If you or a loved one have a chronic health condition which affects vision or are in search of an ophthalmologist, please call Dr. Makkouk at 512-693-9363 or visit his website at austineyecenter.com.
