Trouble After a Hydrocelectomy? Dr. Mistry on Removing Hydroceles, Spermatoceles, and Even the Epididymis
Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there.
In this segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee answer a listener's question about his recent procedure to have hydroceles above his testes removed. After a few weeks of recovery and follow ups with his urologist, our listener is still left with significant swelling and wonders what to do. Dr. Mistry explains that a hydrocele is a non-cancerous fluid sac that develops around the testicle and which has to be surgically removed, not drained, to prevent recurrence. Because this listener says his fluid sacs were above his testicles, Dr. Mistry thinks they may in fact be spermatoceles, or small, non-cancerous, fluid-filled structures behind the testicles that come off of the epididymis. Some patients have so many cysts on their testicles that a epididymectomy is required. In either case, he reminds the audience that the timeline of 6-12 weeks for surgical recuperation is generally accurate, and this listener may have to wait and see how his body recovers over the next several weeks. After time has passed, however, if there is still swelling or any kind of mass remaining, it will likely require further intervention or even a surgical revision. Furthermore, pain or swelling after a vasectomy or a hernia repair should be evaluated ASAP. No matter the cause of swelling in and around the testicles, you should have a thorough evaluation by a trusted urologist. Dr. Mistry is a board-certified urologist and has been treating patients in the Austin and Greater Williamson County area since he started his private practice in 2007.
