What is Your Portion?
I have gazed into my crystal ball many times, but no images appeared so my future as a fortune teller dissolved. But it serves quite well as a metaphor for my theme, which is “What is Your Portion?” so I am satisfied.
I would like to begin with a quote from the late Mr. Stephen Hawking, noted physicist, and author of The Grand Design.
“Because there is a law like gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing…. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going.”
The argument assumes that spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing. The problem is in the “if.” Mr. Hawking simply bypasses the hypothetical nature of his assumption and declares that spontaneous creation exits.
However, it is merely opinion. It cannot be proven. In the absence of any other explanation, theorists default to accident or coincidence or spontaneous creation. It is like pulling a rabbit out of a hat. You may as well believe in my crystal ball.
You must realize that such a statement can never be proven. What if I tried to sell you my crystal ball and you asked me, “Does it really work?” I answer, “Yes, if you are a true fortune teller.” You see the problem? The fault is not in the crystal but in you. You are not a true fortune teller. Putting aside common sense, as many scientific theorists do, the issue can never be resolved.
Did gravity suddenly occur because of spontaneous creation? Did the singularity that created the Big Bang suddenly occur because of spontaneous creation? Did law suddenly occur because of spontaneous creation?
Really what Mr. Hawking is saying is that because we don’t know how things were created, they must have been created by spontaneous creation. The statement is absurd. One could just as easily say that because we don’t know how things were created, they must have been created by magic. It is the same thing.
Everything I say in this podcast is based on the principle that something can never come from nothing. It has both a temporal component and spiritual component. Even God cannot create something from nothing. If he could, then everything would be a product of his imagination which means nothing would be real.
If you don’t have a crystal ball, look into a pool of water or a mirror. The magic is not in the crystal ball. The magic is in your ability to see your own reflection. That is all the proof of your existence that you need. But if you will not settle for a looking-glass image, then peer deep into your eyes until you penetrate your own soul. You know deep inside that you exist. It is not just the living, breathing body that gives you life. You are unique. There is no doppelganger, there is no other you. There is no multiverse where you, like a schizophrenic, split into multiple personalities chasing a chimera of possibilities throughout a multitude of empty eternities.
