On the southern border of Russia lies the massive country of Kazakhstan, a former Soviet Republic. The country, which is mainly Muslim with a Russian minority, has been rocked by protests said to be a result of rising fuel costs. The Kazakhstan government asked Russia for help. The “peace keeping” force being sent by Russia into its neighbour, was described as a "no ordinary peace-keeping force” by The Telegraph Defence Editor Con Coughlin. He comments, "While the Kremlin remains coy about disclosing precisely how many troops have been dispatched to Kazakhstan, the defence ministry has confirmed that an airlift involving 70 aircraft has been launched to deploy forces “around the clock””.
