Everyone is familiar with what feeling conviction is like. Speaking in a spiritual sense, that first conviction we are met with is by the Holy Spirit before we were born again. Jesus said when He would go to heaven, He would send Him [the Holy Spirit] into the world to convict the world of sin. Since then he goes individually to each person one on one whom He convicts personally of sin to save them, and give them eternal life. He does so in order for them to acknowledge their sin nature, and sins committed, and confess them to Jesus Christ. That conviction is the first act of the Holy Spirit in each life He engages. The same conviction goes on throughout the entire life of each child of God.
That conviction is always met with His comfort after the acknowledgment of their acts of sin are confessed. So He first comes to convict of sin, then afterwards enters in as "The Comforter." As time progresses, as they are growing up in the Lord, that conviction becomes the power of their faith. It makes them spiritually strong, resolute and steadfast.
There is also something more than being convicted of sin. It makes their prayers firm because they have deep conviction of the truths they have stood on in every trial. It makes the love they have for others more valiant. Because in their times of disasters, losses and wars, they stood upon the truths of the word by personal conviction of belief. So now they do all things by firm, experiential conviction in love, prayer and obedience. Every part of the Christian's life in thought, motive, action, words and deeds are all deeply rooted in conviction.
When that conviction first came to that person who first believed and received Jesus Christ, it is that same conviction that will keep and carry them until the end of their lives. What a beautiful thing conviction is!
Can anyone say anything negative that comes from the Holy Spirit? If the beautiful, beloved Holy Spirit convicts us, it is done in the most pristine, holy, purest love and comfort to restore. Any other kind of so-called conviction that bows a person down and strips him or her of dignity and freedom is not from Him, but the enemy. Begin to see that His first conviction in you both protects you and keeps you pure and holy. Afterwards it will make you full of courage, brave, strong and resolute like a great captain. Then at the end of your life, you will have beautiful, joyful firm conviction of seeing Him face to face in heaven land.
"You cannot preach conviction of sin unless you have suffered it. You cannot preach repentance unless you have practiced it. You cannot preach faith unless you have exercised it. True preaching is artesian; it wells up from the great depths of the soul. If Christ has not made a well within us, there will be no outflow from us." ~Charles Spurgeon
