As mentioned in the last chapter, the three most important skills for greatness are Energy, Focus and Time. Just as we covered the importance of creating a plan of action for filling our hearts and minds with the right thoughts and influences, we must develop a plan of action for how we manage our time and focus. Let’s go over some practical focus habits and productivity hacks to improve the task management portion of your success routine.
1. BRAIN DUMP AND PRIORITIZE
Nothing can drain you more than feeling overwhelmed by an overload of projects, obligations, tasks and deadlines. We can be inundated with so much to accomplish that it seems suffocating and sets us back from our intentions. I have encountered this myself and with many clients. The best solution is to develop a habit of taking five minutes to stop what we are doing and create two lists; one professional and one personal. Then “brain dump” everything that is on our minds into the lists, including every project and every area needing to be addressed that is plaguing you. You will discover an instant sense of relief knowing everything is in writing.
The next step is to prioritize each list. You can do so with numbers or highlighting in colors:
Stephen Covey writes about a 4-quadrant system in “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” which is also a phenomenal method of prioritizing our tasks, appropriately.
