Nikki couldn’t leave her apartment...sometimes for days. Her anxiety about everything from health issues, to the weather, had hijacked her life. She needed help.
One morning after she had talked with a friend on the phone, she heard someone outside her door, and it was her friend. The woman simply announced herself, and then pushed a piece of paper under the door.
The only thing written on the paper was Psalm 94:19, which says, “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.”
The words just ran over Nikki, and she cried. She felt in that moment the very thing the verse promises. Within a couple of days, she was able to leave her home, and begin the process of recovering from a lifetime of fear.
The Lord is like that, He’s always just outside our door, always ready to comfort us, when life scares us to death. He also provides us with the ability to reason, and to look at our options.
If Scripture is a healing place, we can also find help through counseling. If you’re experiencing destabilizing fear in your life, there is absolutely nothing wrong with reaching out for help. Often the combination of prayer — really seeking God and getting honest with Him, and talking with another human, is the key that unlocks that door and frees you from a dark room of fears, whether rational or irrational.
If you can’t do anything at all in the moment, just take a breath, and cry out to God. And then talk yourself into sharing with somebody else.
You’ll be surprised — in a good way — how healthy you’ll begin to feel.
Let’s pray.
Father God, often the days can seem as dark as the nights, but in your strength, we can rebuke fear, and watch it leave us. Help us in those terrible moments to call on you, and accept the safety only you can bring. Amen.
