The Bible has a lot to say about how we are to treat each other on our life’s journey. One story in particular in Genesis shows us how to resist peer pressure, especially when someone’s life is in danger. In fact, this story really captures the essence of what we’re talking about this week.
John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends."
Jacob had sons, but one was his favorite. Joseph was younger than his brothers and for various reasons, most of them became jealous of him. Not much different than the brother of the Prodigal’s son!
One day, the brothers were working and saw Joseph approaching them. He’d been sent by his father to check on them. It sounds crazy, but they decided to kill him! Throwing him in a well, they left him for dead.
But not all his brothers hated him. Reuben went back to rescue him, but…well, the story is long and you should read it for yourself! But just know that Reuben risked his own life to save his younger brother.
Would we do the same?
Most of us will lead fairly safe lives, especially if we are Americans. We are crazy blessed. But the day might come when you have to step up for someone in trouble. Make sure you’re ready. Make sure you act like Reuben.
Let’s pray. Lord, you strengthen even the weakest of us. Help us to do the right thing when given the chance. Amen.
