#51: Just Keep Dancing: Living Your Dreams in the Face of Adversity with Shala Sarah Haruko Iwaskow
Dua Lipa’s assistant choreographer for the British Music Award, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s co-star in the Mobile Strike Super Bowl commercial, and primary dancer in Jax Jones music video, “Breathe” (over 50 MILLION views), Shala, is a professional dancer, teacher, and choreographer based out of London. Her aura of peace and focused energy is easy to see, and in this episode, she shares with us the years of ups and downs that lead her to where she is today.
Shala was raised both in the UK and in Japan, and in her early twenties, she moved to London with a suitcase, a dream, and barely enough money to live on. She was immediately told by agents that in order to be successful, she would have to have sex with powerful people in the dance industry (which wasn’t the case.) In the early days of her career, she fought depression, dealt with the loss of her grandmother, and ignored the sea of voices telling her that her dreams would never become a reality.
