It will not be an exaggeration of the facts if we say that Mathematics was it its heights of glory in ancient India. The entire 1028 verses of Rigveda are written on one meter or the other which clearly indicates that mathematics was so deeply entwined in ancient Indian lifestyle that the entire communication was done mathematically . Out of six compulsory subjects which were pre requisites for those who wanted to know the Vedas , Chanda(Meter) and Jyotish(Astronomy) were designed to give vivid knowledge of mathematical concepts and mathematical cosmology. Baudhayana,Aryabhat,Varahamihira,Bhaskaracharya gave various concepts of pi,trignometry,calculus,pascal's triangle.The oldest extant mathematical manuscript in South Asia is the Bakhshali Manuscript. Ancient Indians not only had advance knowledge of mathematics but they had mastered the art of encoding also.
