Maharishi Charak- Father of Medicine & Charaka Samhita by Dr Veenus Jain
Acharya Charak has been crowned as the Father of Medicine. His work Charak Samhita is an encyclopedia of Ayurveda. Charaka who was a practitioner of the traditional system of Indian medicine known as Ayurveda had the royal patronage of King Kanishka. Charaka’s contribution to the fields of physiology, etiology and embryology have been recognised. Charaka studied the anatomy of the human body and various organs.
Charaka is generally considered as the first physician to present the concept of digestion, metabolism, and immunity. According to him a body functions because it contains three dosha or principles, namely movement (vata), transformation (pitta) and lubrication & stability (kapha). These doshas are produced when dhatus (blood, flesh and marrow) act upon the food eaten. For the same quantity of food eaten, one body, however, produces dosha in an amount different from another body. That is why one body is different from another. Charak believes that the basic building block of the human body is the cell. Our bodies are made up of countless cells. These cells are composed of 5 fundamental elements- earth, water, fire ,Air and Space similarly other objects of our universe are also made up of the same elements hence proper selection of food and natural medicine help restore the required deficiency in the human body . Through his genius and intuition Acharya Charak has made a landmark contribution to Ayurveda.
