#92: One of the Most Powerful Exercises in Gratitude
Story: Mission trip to La Vega, Dominican Republic in high school
Brief context / background / story
-2020 has been fraught w/emotional ups & downs. In some cases, more downs than ups.
-this year has been filled w/fear, anxiety, uncertainty, disappointment, sadness, grief, frustration, unpredictability, inconsistency, helplessness, lack of control, pain, hurt, injury (physical, mental, emotional & spiritual)
So…why gratitude?
Why gratefulness?
What does “gratefulness” “do” for us?
1.) It shifts our perspective.
2.) It allows us & helps us take our eyes off ourselves.
3.) Imho, it changes the state of our heart.
4.) It reveals things about us by paying attention to what we’re grateful for.
5.) It’s anti-selfishness medicine.
6.) From an EQ perspective, it increases self- & social-awareness. (And the exercises below will help w/self- & social-management.)
Action steps:
1.) Begin a grateful journal. Make a list of all the things you’re thankful for in 2020.
2.) Make 3 entries a day for what you’re grateful for.
3.) Message 3 people right now why you’re thankful for them. Pay attention to how it makes you feel to give & receive a “thankfulness” message.
4.) Make thankfulness a part of your family culture. Everyone shares 3 things at each meal, what they’re thankful for. Make it different each time. Document the list. Review your lists monthly, quarterly or annually.
5.) Observe how life & perspective changes once you begin the practice of gratitude.
