The Spirit of America
We are losing our freedom in America today because we are turning away from the spirit and following the natural man. It is the natural man that gives in to pride, that gives is to the lust for power and money and unjust control.
It is in the nature of natural man that power, once achieved, will never be relinquished except by force. Six thousand years of history have proven it. How many movements in America began with noble goals but ended in ignoble power? Power is a force greater than any human will, greater than any noble ideal. As fire must be fought with fire, power must be controlled by power. We can remain free in this nation only as long as we maintain a balance of power so that the voice of the majority can be heard.
The politicians today are trying to destroy the balance of power by reckless use of executive privilege, abominable misuse of impeachment, stacking the supreme court, viciously attacking any opposing leader or party or individual, intimidation of party members who oppose their views, slander, misrepresentation of facts, distortion of justice, selective anger, using the IRS, FBI, CIA, and other government offices for intimidation of citizens and opposing candidates, ignoring the crimes of their own party members and exaggerating the crimes of opposing party members, and by removing God and Christianity from our nation.
No emergency, no crisis, no world circumstance is so important that we should relinquish our freedom to the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, or the Judicial Branch. What is gained in time of war or crisis will be increased in time of peace and prosperity.
It is very common for those in power, during a crisis, to use that crisis as an excuse to violate civil rights and trample on the basic principles of freedom. The bullying of America during the COVID-19 pandemic by left-leaning governors is an example of self-serving leadership. No crisis, even at the excuse of preserving life, is so great that it justifies taking away the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Regardless of the consequences, authorities must limit their power to that which is granted by the Constitution, or they must take no action at all. Power, like taxes, once given is never forfeited until eventually all the good it proposed to do turns to the destruction of our liberty. Liberty is not lost in one battle. As the bank of a stream unsupported by roots and rocks and other stable forces erodes away with every flood so it is with freedom. Without the stabilizing support of our Constitution, crisis by crisis our liberty is lost, the walls cave in, the balance of power eroded away, and down falls our republic. That which is excused by crisis often becomes a greater tragedy that which is supported by tyranny.
If we do not learn that lesson from the past, we will learn it from the future at the cost of our freedom.
The French Analyst Alexis de Toqueville observed, “America is great because she is good. If American ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”
I shall take a liberty. “America is free because she is good. If American ceases to be good, America will cease to be free.”
If the spirit of America is not free, then the body of America will not be free.
This is the spirit our forefathers had, and this is the spirit that many have today. It is the only spirit that will make America Free, for freedom is spiritual not temporal.
