Director Takashi Shimizu became part of the popular Japanese Horror scene with his work on the Ju-On series. Building off the popularity of J-horror movies like Ringu and Pulse, Shimizu directed 2002's Ju-On: The Grudge. This film became a horror hit and Hollywood took notice - not only offering to do a remake with American actors but also to keep Shimizu in the director's chair for it as well. This is a rarity for remakes and explains why 2004's The Grudge stands out as the most reverent of the source material for Japanese Horror remakes.
