060 - Supported Living in the 18th century? Using the past to shape our practice with Simon Jarrett
In this episode Simon Jarrett helps us understand the history of supported living and how this shapes current practice. Simon challenges us to learn from how people with learning disabilities were supported in the eighteenth century and suggests this could be a model for current service provision.
Simon Jarrett worked in projects with and alongside people with learning disabilities over many years. More recently he became an academic and writer. His book on the history of learning disability, ‘Those they called idiots: the idea of the disabled mind from 1700 to the present day’ was published in 2020. He is the editor of Community Living magazine, a UK-wide quarterly magazine about learning disability.
