The Story of Two Monks: Drop the Baggage that has Fogged Your Mind - Dr Veenus Jain
This simplistic Zen tale conveys a strong message about the importance of living in the present moment. How much do we cart around old wounds and resentments when the only one we are really hurting is ourselves?
We often have occasions in our lives where other people say or do things to us that are distasteful. We may continue to focus on past actions or events, but doing so will inevitably weigh us down and drain our energy.
The truth remains that we cannot alter the past, no matter how much we dwell on those feelings. It makes no difference how many times we try to rewind and edit the mental tape! We, like the junior monk, are always bearing the emotional baggage of events from the past. The truth is that the past cannot be modified!
Moving on is often complicated by our proclivity to cling to the baggage of past events. And it causes us agony and sorrow. We can effectively alleviate this pain by letting go of emotional baggage from the past and focusing on the present moment.
Alternatively, we may choose to let go of what no longer fits us and focus on the present moment. We will never be happy until we can find a degree of peace and satisfaction in our current situations, since ‘now' is everything we will ever have.
