On May 27th, 1962, a routine landfill fire in Centralia, PA spread to a coal mine through an unsealed mine shaft. Though much effort was done to try to contain the fire, it quickly spread out of control and has been burning underneath the city for almost 60 years. In this episode we’ll talk about how this fire was allowed to get so out of control, how the people of Centralia, PA were affected, and how this town became the inspiration for the Silent Hill video game.
