Prepare for the worst, hope for the best

The 2009 pandemic influenza outbreak was the worst in living memory. For a time, the impact of the virus threatened to completely overwhelm ICU resources around the world. Dr Brent Richards, Chair of the Queensland Intensive Care Network, describes how a co-ordinated and proactive response helped manage the disaster.
