The day Bravo’s Top Chef asked Evelyn Garcia – the chef behind Kin HTX – to appear on its 19th season, she had to think long and hard about it. Yes, it was a chance to compete for $250,000, and yes, it was great publicity. But was she ready? Evelyn had already turned down Top Chef in 2014 when she felt too young and inexperienced to compete. But this time, she considered all she’s learned in the past several years working in New York and Southeast Asia, experiencing so many different kitchens and preparing so many different kinds of foods. Now feels ready – and the best part? She’s steeped in the rich Houston food scene ... the site of this year’s Top Chef competition.
This season's first episode of Bravo's Top Chef airs at 7 p.m. Thursday. There'll be Top Chef-watching parties at Axelrad and St. Arnold's Brewery, and on Friday evening, there's an After-Party and Pop-Up Market at Stomping Grounds.
