Law of Liberty
The purpose of a free government is to allow freewill to be expressed as much as possible and still secure the safety of the citizens. Though we all must practice good judgment and be held personally accountable for unwise decisions, it is the purpose of government to protect its citizens against fraud, terrorism, intimidation, thieves, murderers, liars, cheats, predators, bullies, threats from foreign powers, mountebanks, charlatans, cheats, criminals, crooked and unscrupulous predators and unprincipled business practices and such like. It is not the purpose of government to guarantee success or to bail out our mistakes. It is not the purpose of government to guarantee a home, car, food, retirement, healthcare, or even other necessities. A democratic republic is based upon self-reliance. A good government creates an environment for success by prosecuting criminals, but a good government does not create success or guarantee success.
The potential for failure is necessary in a free society. The purpose of government is to protect our liberty, protect our borders, protect our streets, protect our citizens, and enforce laws against criminals.
A free government must have faith in its citizens, faith in free enterprise, faith in self-reliance, and faith in the people to govern themselves. In a free society, charity will spontaneously emerge that will more wisely meet the needs of the poor, the hungry, and the disadvantaged. No society can ignore the poor and continue to expect the blessings of heaven. In a free society, business based on necessities will emerge and all services will be provided in a competitive atmosphere. When government controls prices, power is centralized, and entitlements are unevenly distributed through bribes. When power and money become the primary goal of our governors, then freedom is soon lost. When the people sell their freedom to those in power to satisfy their physical needs, then power falls into the hands of a few and the end of liberty is near.
Liberty has three parts: (1) the freedom of temporal law, (2) the agency of spiritual law, and (3) the liberty of manmade law. Freedom gives us choices. Agency gives us the wisdom to make those choices. Liberty provides a government that allows us freedom, agency, and liberty. Without all three, though we may have government, we cannot have liberty. We must have a perfect balance among the three.
Our forefathers instituted a balance of power into our democratic republic: The Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch. As citizens we must balance that power with our own personal code: The Laws of Nature, The Laws of God, and The Laws of Man. True science will teach us the laws of nature. True religion will teach us the laws of God. By true religion, I refer to absolute truth. Each may worship his own God, be allied with his own chosen religion, set of beliefs, denomination, etc. but truth may be found everywhere. Truth trumps orthodoxy. It is my opinion that the search for truth is the greatest quest man can make. I am happy to tell people what I think, but I will never tell someone what they should think. And wise people will teach us the laws of man. We have the wisdom of the ages to validate all three. All are necessary, but none are sufficient to have a true democratic republic.
The purpose of a free government is to create an environment where the will of the majority rules. If the majority desire evil, freedom will fall under the avalanche of heavy laws that rain down on the heads of a corrupt people. The spirit of God withdraws where evil prevails, and liberty goes with it.
