Season 3 Podcast 45 Letters of John to the Seven Churches Pt V Titles of Christ Pt I
Titles of Christ Pt I
As stated in a previous podcast the seven letters to the seven churches hold the key to understanding the Book of Revelation. That is why they are first.
And the first thing all Christians must understand is who Christ is. The Book of Revelation is dedicated to describing Christ and defining his attributes. Ancient Hebrew Poetry is distinguished by parallelism.
The most emphatic positions of any poem are the beginning and the ending; therefore, the most important information will be given there. It is no accident that the heaviest concentration of the titles of Christ is given at the beginning of the Book of Revelation and the ones he wanted to emphasize are listed at the ending of the book of Revelation. That is by design. The middle will be an explanation or expansion of the concepts introduced at the beginning and expanded and emphasized at the ending.
In this Podcast Linda and will focus on the titles of Christ given in chapters 1, 2, & 3 of the Book of Revelation. Chapter one introduces Christ. Chapters 2 & 3 contain the seven letters to the seven churches.
It is no Accident, for example, that the following Title is found both in the first chapter and the last chapter of the Book of Revelation:
8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. (Revelation 1:8)
13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. (Revelation 22:13)
The titles listed above describe the eternal nature of Christ. The other titles of Christ in the Book of Revelation expand that definition. The purpose of the titles is to describe attributes, powers, authorities, and callings of the Risen Lord. I don’t think another book in Holy Scriptures contains as many titles of Christ as does the Book of Revelation.
5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Revelation 1:5-8

2. the faithful witness,
3. the first begotten of the dead,
4. the prince of the kings of the earth.
5. him that loved us,
6. him that washed us from our sins in his own blood,

9. the Lord,
10. which is,

The Book of Revelation was revealed to John while he was held prisoner on the Isle of Patmos.
9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,
(Revelation 1:9-10)
