If you’re a fan of spirited, classic-sounding house music than there’s little doubt that Frazer Campbell is a name you’ll have become accustomed with of late. The London-based DJ and producer has been releasing a slew of bombs lately, chiefly via his Counterfeit Soul label. Now, for the first time in the label’s brief history, the label boss perks up with a VA, featuring an original by himself as well as three cleverly chosen producers in the shape of Paul Mac (aka Jorge Zamacona), Jorge Caiado and Ste Roberts. Producers who evidently share a similar version to Campbell himself, this is top class fare of the sort you’ll never tire of hearing.
We open with Campbell’s quite excellent ‘Cloud 909’. Classy and sophisticated and crafted in a similar vein to Chez Damier and Ron Trent’s much-celebrated work, it’s notable for its killer vibes and husky, sampled vocal. Featuring twinkle-toed piano melodies throughout, it’s a nimble gem that’s sure to have trainspotters reaching for Shazam at the earliest opportunity.
Next up is the snaky sounds of Jorge Zamacona’s most-excellent ‘Doom Dub’. A whimsical, hypnotic cut that takes the proverbial breadth away, it to impresses, but this time in a different manner to what’s come before. A baseline-led jam that’s made for deeper moments, it forces parallels with some of Mr G’s most potent and prolific output. The B side then gets underway with Jorge Caiado’s ‘Drifting with Aliens’. As you might imagine from its title, this one is firmly geared toward the night’s tripper hours.
Seeing us out the gate after is Hypercolour’s Set Roberts, who closes out the heavyweight package via another deep cut. Sticky and stifling, it’s an introspective jam that’s sure to draw contrasting reactions on the floor. A record of various moods, vibes and sounds, Counterfeit Soul’s latest is one that speaks volumes of a label and a label owner quite clearly going places.
