Temporary Peyronie's? Can Rezum Prostate Treatment Cause Peyronie's Disease, and Is It Permanent?
Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there.
In this segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee answer a listener's question about the temporary appearance of a lump and hourglass deformity on his penis following a Rezum prostate procedure. He wonders if his Rezum--a treatment that applies steam to shrink the size of the prostate--could've caused this concern. Dr. Mistry explains that this listener actually developed Peyronie's disease which seems to have resolved itself. If you have developed a bend in your penis or if, when erect, it stands at an unnatural angle, you may have Peyronie's disease. While the exact cause is unknown, Peyronie's may be caused by the slowly accumulating effects of microtrauma to the penis sustained during intercourse with a less-than-fully-erect penis or by sudden, more severe trauma. Dr. Mistry says that although no long term studies demonstrate a connection between Rezum and the development of Peyronie's, anecdotally, he has seen this happen in some of his patients. While rare, the trauma of a Rezum procedure might be enough to cause Peyronie's disease to develop. It is rare for this condition to resolve fully on its own, and because the full healing time from Peyronie's is about a year, this patient may not be out of the wood yet. Dr. Mistry would recommend he start regenerative treatments that promote healthy arteries and nerves immediately. Interventions like a daily Cialis prescription, curcumin supplement, and perhaps even shockwave treatments may help prevent a recurrence of this listener's Peyronie's. If you have symptoms of Peyronie's, getting an evaluation and proper measurement of your curvature by a urologist is essential in identifying the right treatment.
