Gli Azzurri actually made it to the competition this time, after the doomed attempt to qualify for Euro '92.
Now under the tutelage of Arrigo Sacchi, Italy went into Euro '96 as one of the favourites, and Sacchi had an embarrassment of riches to choose from.
Things however didn't pan out like everyone thought, because of, well, Sacchi.
Italy were drawn in Group C alongside Germany, Russia and Czech Republic.
