Episode 35: Tyson Trunkhill The Dust Off Project Take Two: Part One
One of the more difficult podcasts that I have done thus far, I want to thank our guest for his transparency, honesty and willingness to share his story about PTSD. Our mission here at HHAUSA is to change and save lives and conversations like these need to happen in order to reach those it is intended for. Not for the faint of heart, it is dark and graphic at times so please listen with discretion.
In the first of a two part episode, Tyson Trunkhill returns to The HHAUSA Podcast, this time to share the series of events that brought on his PTSD. Working security detail on a transport route in Al Asad, Iraq in 2006, his unit came under fire frequently but one specific incident stands out from the others. Stopped at a roadside checkpoint, their convoy was hit by an IED, resulting in serious injury to the driver. Exiting his armored vehicle along with a medic, Tyson would witness a soldier being blow apart less than 40 meters from where he stood. The only thing saving Tyson's life and others was the fact that the device was partially buried when it detonated and the soldier took the brunt of the impact. The Iowa native would move on from the incident without a scratch but the mental scars would follow him the rest of his life.
Later in his decorated career, Trunkhill would be responsible for notifying family members that their loved ones were injured or killed in action, a job that also took a heavy toll on him. As his PTSD began to worsen, he found himself not wanting to leave his house and began to drink more heavily to cope with all that he had witnessed during his time of service.
But the story doesn't end there. Now retired, Tyson is four years sober and doing amazing things in the Veteran community, having learned to cope with his PTSD and driven to help others with their struggles through the sport of archery. Join us on Episode 36 as we discuss what that journey has looked like and how he believes sharing his story can help others.
