The word "prepare" has never been more employed than now. It is used mostly as an alarm bell these days. When really that word is used 266 times throughout the Bible. Not just in the preparing oneself for the coming of the Lord. It is used in many ways relating to God. When I started really looking at that word it became so beautiful to me, as I saw that preparation is something done from the heart. At least when it comes to anything that touches the Lord.
On one hand the believer's life in this world is by osmosis a preparing for heaven. There are other preparations that have to do with preparing one's own heart to seek the Lord on a matter. While there are other times going to God to ask Him to prepare our hearts is for the purpose of going beyond the carnal realm of prayer. Prayer is a true communion with Him. So it is necessary in this fast tracking world to ask Him to get your heart in a place to be able to speak to Him from there.
There are times when a person is getting ready to die, and they ask the Lord to prepare them for eternity. They ask Him to prepare their loved ones for peace when they pass away. God began by "preparing the light and the sun." He prepared a body for His Son to come into this world to be crucified for the sins of all mankind. Jesus went to prepare a place for us. Therefore we must be a prepared people to go to a prepared place. There are so many attempts by well meaning, sincere people in "trying" to prepare.
They come up short because they feel that they can never be what they should be when Christ returns. The real way to prepare is to walk out your life hour by hour in the way of the Lord. Living before the Lord in loving obedience to Him. As well as in everything they do with their eyes on Him. Let God prepare you for everything now while you are alive on earth. And let Him prepare you for eternal glory. After all, that is the workmanship of the Holy Spirit who is making you ready. God is a preparing God, and He has prepared everything for us. Let us go to Him and ask Him to prepare us, and let Him do only what He can and will do to His eternal glory and ours for His namesake.
“It was the mighty power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in Him by which Jesus overcame the world–and that same quiet power, if it dwells in us, will make us win the same victory by faith.” ― Charles H. Spurgeon
