Credo - Father Xavier Perrin - 2022-03-23
Fr. Xavier Perrin is the abbot of QUARR Abbey. He studied French Literature at Rennes and History of Art at the Sorbonne before entering the Abbey of St Anne, Kergonan, Brittany in 1980. He made his final vows in Brittany in 1985 and was ordained priest in 1989. Meanwhile he had completed his ecclesiastical studies at the Abbey of Solesmes. He also studied Theology at Fribourg and Munich. In his monastery, he has held the offices of guest master (1990-1993), novice master (1993-2010) and choir master (1996-2013) and subprior from 1991 to 2002 when he was appointed prior. He has also been organist all through his monastic life. Father Xavier has written extensively on the history of his monastery and of the Solesmes Congregation, to which both QUARR and Kergonan belong. He has also written on spirituality, and on Gregorian chant. The first of Father Xavier’s visits to QUARR was as representative of his community at the funeral of Abbot Leo Avery in 1996. Fr. Xavier shares with listeners about the Benedictine Rule of Prayer. The rule of St Benedict offers us countless opportunities for reflections of our own. It challenges us to remain faithful to our stated Benedictine values by translating those values into our everyday lives at Stella Maris. The Rule may have been written 1500 years ago with a very different audience in mind but even, or perhaps especially, reading in and between the lines, it offers us wise counsel for today.
