Episode 38: Lauren Rich The Only Therapist Who's Got Your Six
Fighting PTSD through archery and the outdoors is at the heart of the HHAUSA mission. When I sat down to write the intro for this episode, I didn’t want to take away from the message that our guest spelled out so clearly in the About section on her website. The wife of a Combat Veteran who suffers from PTSD, I'm going to let Lauren Rich tell you what drives her work in her own words:
If you're like most vets, you've made your rounds through several therapists. They've either dismissed the challenges you're facing altogether, or convinced you to cover up your trauma with pills. Nothing has worked...
While working as a Combat Trauma/PTSD Psychotherapist with the VA for 7 years I sadly observed first-hand that most vets were not receiving the help they actually needed.
Frustrated with the bureaucracy, I started my own practice to help vets overcome combat trauma.
I'm not here to be your cheerleader - to pat you on the head and make you feel better about your day. I'm going to be your battle buddy - someone who guides you through the process of resolving trauma.
I learned so much in this episode and the science behind why shooting a bow and arrow has had such positive results on those with PTSD. I was excited when Lauren agreed to join us again as a regular guest to share how she is using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy with the Veteran and First Responder community.
If you don't live in Arkansas or Oklahoma and would like to connect with a counselor like Lauren, please visit: www.emdria.org. There you can find a complete directory to locate a therapist in your area specializing in combat trauma and PTSD using EMDR. You can also follow Lauren on Facebook, follow her YouTube channel, The Mental 9 Line or check out her website at www.laurenrich.net.
Fully aware of the fact that it is difficult sometimes to start therapy, Lauren threw out the idea of taking random questions before our next episode and she would be happy to respond to those. We look forward to having her join us again in 2022 and cannot thank her enough for the work she is doing to serve the Veteran and First Responder community.
