Almost 30 years before shows like Hulu’s ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING and the box office hit KNIVES OUT grabbed audiences and awards while bringing a comic edge to the old-fashioned whodunit genre, actor and filmmaker Beau Marie brought together a zany but skilled company of actors to create one of the most twisted murder mystery comedies put on 16mm film: WHO KILLED TIZZLE?, originally shot in 1995 and now coming to digital audiences after spending years on the proverbial cutting room floor.
Bookended by newly-animated yet hilariously narrated recaps that put the show’s wacky developments in context while also previewing the antics to come, WHO KILLED TIZZLE? stars Ivo Tomasini (who also co-wrote, co-produced, co-directed and co-stars in the series with Marie) as a way-too-driven gumshoe out to capture the person - or people - who slaughtered the show’s titular victim.
Noted Marvel comic book writer and novelist Clay Chapman portrays one of the many would-be perpetrators, Mr. Frugal. Beau also plays multiple characters in this show, including the overly anxious suspect Mr. Skeeter, the egotistical Mr. Fondu, and an assortment of eccentric off-camera narrators.
Given how deranged the suspects he’s dealing with are, and that he’s trapped in the same room with all of them, this detective who thinks he’s seen everything must now solve this seemingly unsolvable case…or he just might be their next target.
Now on this week’s Viewfinder Podcast, Beau and I talk about how this incredibly funny show finally got to the small (and smaller) screens after decades of dormancy, and how WHO KILLED TIZZLE? is emblematic of the absurdist comedic style that’s fully embodied in his storytelling.
