Shirley Bloodworth is 92 years young. She has spent her life making active change for those who often cannot advocate for themselves. Shirley is part of a community concerned for older adults, Community Coalition for Older Adults (CCOA), who got together through community collaboration and advocated to build a senior recreation center. It exists to provide all kinds of programs to promote independent living for seniors, to educate seniors on advance care planning, to provide peer support services, to provide opportunities to learn different activities of daily living skills, and to connect seniors to resources for all kinds of recreation. The recreation center would not have been possible with the efforts of the CCOA in advocating to local city and county commissioners, to put together the necessary resources to build it, along with getting a community agency to run the center and provide the operational cost. The CCOA does so much for the community; they hold monthly meetings, inviting all kinds of people to come and talk to their group about all different aspects of what it means to age healthy.
Shirley talks about being a lifelong learner, about serving and returning, paying it forward, and about the challenges she’s going through during this time of division. She is a true champion for people.
