Orleans Parish Prison was opened in 1989 and held between 1300 to 1500 prisoners. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina was bearing down on New Orleans. Instead of starting evacuation, Sheriff Marlin Gusman decided to keep the prisoners "where they belong" and let them sit at the prison.

August 29th - Katrina hits New Orleans - Power is lost, backup generators fail, and the first floor cells flood with water. There is no air circulation and sewage seeped into the water that was quickly rising to chest level.
August 30th - Sheriff Gusman finally asks for help with evacuation.
Listen now as we explain the rest of what happened to these prisoners and guards at the command of Sheriff Gusman. Many lives were lost and injustices faced during this terrible time.
