One of the things I struggle with as a Jesus follower is holding space for people who are hurting or going through a difficult time and also being a light or encouraging. As I’ve been paying attention to the mental health professionals, I’ve been learning about the concept of Toxic Positivity. And to be honest, I’ve been guilty of this…probably even more than I realize.
When I wanted to explore this conversation, I knew just the right person to reach out to. Clinical Psychologist Dr. Patrice Berry joined the show in season 12 when we focused on transitioning out of quarantine, and has discussed Toxic Positivity on her own podcast, Legacy Moments.
We spend time today defining toxic positivity, where the church is failing people in their mental health, and how to find encouragement in scripture and at the same time hold space for the difficulties or pain others or ourselves may be in.
