ep. 5 The Dynamics of Intuition and Sensing (feat. Nate Rasa)
Sensing and intuition are the two perceiving functions, or as I like to call the experiential functions. I call them this because sensing and intuition are both ways of experiencing life — unlike feeling and thinking which is a way of assessing life as good vs. bad and right vs wrong.
What are the dynamics of intuition and sensing?
Intuition is focused on possibilities and potential. When intuition extroverted (Ne), these possibilities are expanded outward, like a never-ending tree branch. But with introverted intuition (Ni), the perception is focused on boiling down all of the possibilities into one interconnected, foundational root.
Ni and Ne flow in opposite directions. But when Ni and Ne work together, the chemical reaction can create innovative new possibilities for the future. But when they butt heads, it can create a creative block. Sometimes Ne will try and expand when Ni is trying to zone in, and Ni can find Ne distracting. Or Ne can find Ni to be one-track minded.
Sensing is focused on the physical facts and data they perceive. People who prefer experiencing life through sensing tend to be practical, down-to-earth, and grounded. While extroverted sensing (Se) is focused on engaging in the moment to make an impact, introverted sensing (Si) is focused on finding homeostasis in the sensory plane overtime.
Se can feel overwhelming and overstimulating from Si’s point of view, which is focused on conserving their own physical energy so they can operate consistently overtime. But Si can feel limiting to Se’s energy, who just wants to embrace the now for all its worth. While Se is more afraid of regretting not acting in the moment, Si is more afraid of making a reckless mistake they’d regret. So Se leans toward controlling their reality, while Si leans toward caution.
In this episode, I'm joined by ENFP Nate Rasa to discuss the dynamics of intuition and sensing.
