In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to discuss the Trojans first Coliseum spring practice of the Lincoln Riley era, giving all of the new coaches and players their first taste of football in USC's historic home. They discuss what Riley and the other coaches and players said about being able to practice in that environment and how Riley wants to see the Coliseum full for the spring game and of course when football season starts in September. The Trojans are now done with 10 of their allotted 15 spring practices and Riley wants to focus on the team finishing strong.
"Losers coast, average programs coast," Riley said.
There will be no coasting to the finish for the Trojans as they have one more practice and scrimmage in the Coliseum before the spring game in front of fans on April 23 at noon, shown live in ESPN.
Tuesday's Coliseum practice also held live periods where the team scrimmaged. We were unable to watch those portions of practice but afterwards Riley said that it was back-and-forth between the offense and the defense with the offense getting the early jump, the defense finishing strong and overall he said the defense won the day.
The guys also talk about a bunch of new names that have been gold-plated, given their Trojan logo helmet sticker for the work they have put in on the practice field and meeting rooms.
Former USC quarterback J.T. Daniels has found a new home, reuniting with former USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell at West Virginia. Daniels had visited Oregon State which would have given him the opportunity to play against the Trojans in 2022, but with his commitment to WVU he will now get to play against the player that replaced him in 2019 following his knee injury, new Pitt quarterback Kedon Slovis. Such is the soap opera that is college football.
With the loss of five-star OT Josh Conerly to Oregon, USC will now have to look to the NCAA Transfer Portal to shore up the offensive line after spring ball. On Wednesday another potential option entered the portal, Texas A&M lineman Derick Hunter who played for USC offensive line coach Josh Henson.
Ryan and Chris will be doing regular podcasts together going forward, so make sure you send in your questions addressed to them at podcast@uscfootball.com.
