Episode 119 Mac Mckew A former baseball coach turned umpire recounts his amazing health transformation journey.
Name: Mac McKew Home: Portland, Maine USA Age: 62 (November 6, 1959) Height: 6’ 1” Current Weight: 170 lbs. I am a 62 year-old business professional, former high school baseball coach and current high school & college baseball umpire. In October of 2019, one month shy of my 60thbirthday, I had hip replacement surgery. At the time of my surgery I weighed 215 lbs. The typical recovery from hip replacement surgery is three months until you are back to about 85% and then another nine months (one year from the surgery) until you are back to the point of “as good as it will be.” The holidays of 2019 followed my hip surgery where my mobility was limited, but my appetite for holiday food was not. On January 1st of 2020, I weighed in at 230 lbs. Not long after that the pandemic known as COVID-19 arrived in the United States. I believed there would be one of two responses to the pandemic with many businesses (including gyms) shutting down and people working remotely. One response would be to fall into a state of depression, feel sorry for myself and eat junk food for my medication…or, a second response, use the pandemic to inspire myself to get after it and develop good habits. Thank God I chose the latter. My wife and I put together a home gym in our basement with equipment like kettlebells, bands and TRX straps. We created a three day on - one day off workout plan. It was great; however the nutrition piece was still missing. In late February I purchased the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. The book was a gamechanger for me in many ways. One of them was the authors use of intermittent fasting. I had first heard of IF when I was with a couple of my assistant coaches a few years ago, and we went out to breakfast together. We sat down to order breakfast and when one of them only ordered black coffee; I asked if that is all he wanted? I was then introduced to IF; frankly I thought he was wacky. Little did I know then that intermittent fasting was going to be my nutritional gamechanger. I really started applying it in March of 2020. I weighed 225 lbs. On June 13th I weighed in at 193 lbs. and on September 24th the scale read 172 lbs.
