When you love something, set it free. In this instance, I’ve been doing just that with Mortal Kombat. The beloved video game series has always been near and dear to my heart. I love the juvenile violence. The 80’s action movie aesthetic. The detailed backstories of revenge and tragedy layered over competitive 2D set pieces of gore and grime. And I set it free...for this. The 1995 film isn’t all bad, of course. There’s commendable effort to please the studio heads as well as the video game fans. But at what cost? Mortal Kombat (1995) loses the gore, the snark, the panache and substitutes a load of exposition and quick cutting! Our review pulls no punches (pun intended). But here’s to hoping the sequel can deliver on the failed promise...
