MES Lecture Series - VADM Pascal Ausseur (France, Ret.), "Rising Tensions in the Mediterranean"
This lecture is part of the AY22 Middle East Studies (MES) Lecture Series.
In our new fragmenting world, the Eastern Mediterranean plays an important role because it stands at the geopolitical crossroads of American, European, Russian, Middle Eastern and Chinese interests. The Eastern Mediterranean concentrates tensions: tensions linked to the dysfunctions of societies in the South, tensions linked to inequality between the two shores, tensions linked to the play of regional powers and finally growing tensions between the global powers confronting each other in this crucial region, as the war in Ukraine illustrates. Understanding what is at stake in this region will enable future military officials, as well as citizens, to better understand the missions they will undertake in the coming decades.
Vice-Admiral (ret.) Pascal Ausseur is Director of the Mediterranean Foundation of Strategic Studies (FMES), a think-tank dedicated to the Euro-Mediterranean region and the Middle East and North Africa. During his military career he served in operational positions on surface ships, including within the French Aircraft Carrier Group, and was appointed three times as commanding officer. He also served as Maritime Prefect for the Manche and North Sea and chief of the military cabinet at the Ministry of Defense. He has extensive operational and political-military experience in the Mediterranean Sea, the Middle East and North Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, and the Indian Ocean.
