Galatians 5:19-21
Paul highlights sins that we fight against – not an exhaustive list.
The first three are sexual sins:
Sexual immorality—any form of illicit sexual relationship.
Impurity—moral uncleanness in our thoughts, speech, and actions.
Debauchery—this is when people become desensitized to sexual exploits and flaunt sinful behavior.
Next, there are two religious sins:
Idolatry is the worship of anything in place of God.
Sorcery—pharmakeia—pharmacy. Use of drugs to create potions and create trances.
Last, there are eight societal evils.
As a believer, we will win the battle—Jesus has done that for us. He conquered death. Every day is resurrection day!
Jesus died for our sins and was raised for our justification (Rom 4:25).
Jesus was raised by the glory of the Father (Rom 6:4).
Being raised, Jesus will never die again (Rom 6:9).
Jesus was raised and is seated now at the right hand of God (Eph 1:20).
We have been raised with Jesus through faith in God’s work (Col 2:12)
Jesus was raised “in order that we might bear fruit for God” (Rom 7:4).
What does the fruit we are to bear for God look like? That’s what Paul wants to tell us about in Galatians 5:22-23.
Gift of the Spirit—Salvation (Acts 2:38, 11:17)
Gifts of the Spirit—Service (1 Peter 4:10)
Fruit of the Spirit—Character/Attitude (Gal 5:22-23)
