On this dojo, Tony talks about what can we learn from those who have an impenetrable inner citadel and how we can work towards building one for ourselves. The inner citadel is a powerful concept for Tony to adapt into his life. Continuing the conversation from the previous dojo about suffering, this episode talks about the inner citadel being a tool that can help us make sense of suffering, so that we can become better through that suffering.
So what is the concept of the inner citadel? Tony came across the inner citadel through his studying of the stoics and stoic philosophy, which is meant to be put into practice for the purpose of helping us to become better people. The inner citadel is an inner fortress and inside that fortress is the true essence of who we are. According to the Epictetus, if we have a strong inner citadel, then our true self can never be harmed. This fortress which protects the true essence of who we are is something that according to the stoics, we are not born with; we have to create this inner citadel to protect our true selves. And not only do we need to create it, but we have to cultivate it, foster it, nurture it, maintain it, and sustain it over time.
