The scat is about to hit the fan. When the gold starts showing up at Shadow creek, things do change for the Ingallas and Edwards/Snider/Sanderson troupe. Trying to get in on some gold action Laura and Carl offer to help Zachariah with his mines. But he refuses to look for more gold. Because he has a stockpile, it just happens to be buried in the creek under his wife these last 20 years. The quiet, little, affordable town of Newton is transformed overnight into New Deadwood. And it is no longer a safe place to be. In fact being at Shadow Creek isn't a safe place to be. However, this doesn't get Charles to start packing up his family and heading back home to Walnut Grove. Instead he packs up the family and moves them into expanding, loud, and unaffordable place that Newton has become.
