This episode I talk with Alice Genese & Shaune Pony Heath; two friends who would meet on Tuesdays to talk and informally play some music in their living rooms. Those meetings eventually became the band OV Stars. Alice talks to me about how she grew up a block from the legendary venue, Maxwell’s, in Hoboken, NJ. She began her music career playing bass with Gut Bank and Sexpod. She eventually met up with Genesis P-Orridge and played bass for Psychic TV for the last 20 years.
Shaune discusses growing up in Pretoria, South Africa and how the music scene was the ultimate in DIY, sometimes meaning you had to build your own stage from tires and soil,
Alice and Shaune had written so much music together that recording was the obvious next step. Shaune tells me about being terrified but how being immediately thrown in the deep end didn’t give him time to overthink the process. So go check out the OV Stars EP, Tuesdays, on Bandcamp. Follow them on all the socials. And if you happen to be in Asbury Park, NJ, stop by The Stone Pony and get one of Alice’s Jell-O shots!
