Lots of people want to be prophets and lots of people claim to be prophets; and yet, God is the One who decides which person’ He’ll speak through. Today, we’ll look at Numbers 12 and read about Aaron’s and Miriam’s revolt against Moses because they thought they could hear from God too! We’ll find that was not the case. We’ll also take a moment to discuss how we can determine a true prophet. Join us!
1. Have you ever heard someone who claimed to be a prophet? How did they confirm that they were indeed hearing from God?
2. In verse 1, what was the surface reason that Aaron and Miriam were upset with Moses? What was the real reason for their complaint that was given in verse 2?
3. What was the difference between the Lord’s communication with Moses (in verses 6-8) versus His communication with others?
4. In verse 8, the Lord says that Moses has even beheld His form. Likewise, Exodus 24:10-11 indicates that the leaders also saw the Lord. Aaron was part of that group. How does this reality bring further judgment upon Aaron’s insurrection?
5. What was the Lord’s attitude (in verse 9) towards these people who claimed He was speaking to them? Look up Matthew 7:15-20, what does the Lord warn us about listening to people who claim to be prophets?
6. Look up passages like Deuteronomy 4:2, Deuteronomy 12:32, Revelation 22:18; what did God command about the declaration of His Word?
7. What was God’s judgment on Miriam in verse 10? What does this seem to indicate about her role in this little revolt? How did Moses intercede for her in this passage?
8. Deuteronomy 18:20-22 contains the God-ordain means that which we can determine who He is speaking through. What are the ways given in that passage?
9. A key proof of legitimate prophecy is a prophet who predicts the future with 100% accuracy. Why do you think so many modern prophets sidestep this fundament proof of actually hearing from God?
10. Look up Joshua 1:7 and Hebrews 1:2; if we want to hear from God, what does scripture tell you to do?
