GENESIS KEY CHAPTERS DISCUSSION AND THOUGHT QUESTIONS: The following discussion questions can stand alone or be used in conjunction with the Key Chapters podcast. They can be used in a Small Group, family discussion, or for personal reflection. The idea is that the person/group/family will have read the Key Chapter and then answer the questions. Perhaps there would be time to listen to the podcast as well.
1. Genesis 14 is a key chapter because of what it tells us about Melchizedek. However, Melchizedek does not arrive on the scene until verse 17. What events led up to his introduction?
2. Who were the two kings that are mentioned in verses 17 & 18? Given the city that the King of Sodom presided over, what might we surmise this man?
3. What does the podcast explain that Genesis 14:18 means when it says that Melchizedek was a priest of the most high God?
4. The name “Melchizedek” comes from the word “melek” meaning “king” and “tsedaqah” meaning “righteousness.” What does this name tell us about Melchizedek’s character? What does the podcast say about how this relates to the character and standard of God’s priests and servants?
5. Melchizedek was a king from Salem, which is later renamed as “Jerusalem”. The name “Salem” means “peace”. What does this indicate about this “King of Peace”? What does this suggest about our relationship with the Lord?
6. How does the podcast help us understand Abram’s refusal to receive any of the spoils of victory in Genesis 14:23? What does this indicate about the foundation of this new nation of people who follow God?
7. What does the introduction of this priesthood indicate about the kind of worship that will comprise this new nation?
8. If the nation of Israel was designed to walk with God and follow His ways, why would there be the need for a priesthood in the first place?
9. One of the most important takeaways from this passage is that Jesus is in the priesthood of Melchizedek. We saw this in Psalm 110:4 and later in Hebrews 7:17. Why is this vital to understanding the priesthood of the New Covenant, versus the priesthood of the Old Covenant?
10. How does Jesus serve now, as our High Priest?
