110. Talking Sex In Church with Bryan and Bonnie Pue
Welcome to episode #110!
In this episode, Matt and Braden chat with Bryan and Bonnie Pue, leaders and founders of the Union Movement.
Why do church leaders hesitate to talk about porn and sex?
There are a variety of reasons for pastors to not talk about porn and sex in their church. Awkwardness is a real issue that often hinders the pastor from even knowing where to start. Purity culture took place in the 90s and early 2000s where there were more rules and legalistic teachings taught, so adding in the grace component as well as deeper explanations on why boundaries around sex exist is a newer approach to church culture. It will often take bringing someone in with expertise in this area to train the church on how to effectively talk about sex, porn, and other sexual issues.
What will happen if leaders stay silent
In the story of Balaam and Balak in the book of Numbers, the enemy of God wants to get the people to commit sexual immorality as it will lead to a curse on the land. This is the same thing that will happen to people in sexual sin today. When church leaders stay silent on the issue, not only will their people be more likely to fall, but they as leaders will be too. God's enemy knows that if you strike a shepherd, the sheep will scatter. If a pastor falls into sexual sin, a lot of people who looked up to that pastor will start questioning whether or not Jesus is worth following.
Sexual Health Evaluations are effective
The Union Movement has a Sexual Health Evaluation that church leaders can take advantage of to gauge the sexual health of their staff as well as the people in their pews. It's not long from a time perspective and it's easy to use. Bryan and Bonnie will help you create a strategy to deal with sexual immorality in your church.
When we don't hear of sexual sin being talked about in our church, it's easy to believe that it's not going on. In reality, silence is usually just covering some ugly truths that the Sexual Health Evaluation can reveal.
