Grace is God’s free sovereign favor to the undeserving.
Acts 21-22 tell the story of Paul’s trip back to Jerusalem to end his third missionary journey. While in Jerusalem, Paul was confronted and ultimately beaten by those who did not understand God’s grace. Paul was saved from death by Roman officials and at the end of Acts 22 is in their custody. It was hard for the early Jewish Christians to grasp grace. And the same goes for many believers today.
GRASPING GRACE
• MAN’S MORAL BANKRUPTCY
Romans 3:9-12
What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
Romans 3:23-24
…For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God….
• GOD’S JUSTICE
Nahum 1:3a
The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death….
• MAN’S HELPLESSNESS
Romans 3:20
For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
• GOD’S SOVEREIGN FREEDOM
Acts 17:24-25
The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
Romans 3:23-24
…For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus….
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
