6/7 Psalm 119:113-144 - Spiritual Illumination
In order for us to gain understanding and insights into God's Word, He must illumine us. Today we'll dive into Psalm 119:113-144 to see how the Holy Spirit uses His Word to illumine us to increasingly understand Him and His Word and how we might live. Join us!
DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS:
1. Verse 113 probably surprises us with how it begins with saying that the psalmist hates those who are double-minded. What did the podcast say about the word “hate” and what does it mean in this passage?
2. Look over verses 113 to 120. What does this passage show us about the challenges the author was having with people around him? Have you had similar challenges with people in your life? Why do you think that is?
3. In these verses (verses 113-13), in what way does the psalmist seek to minimize the influence of evildoers in his life? How can we follow similar principles in our lives today?
4. What is the psalmist’s view of the Lord in verse 120? How is this view necessary to live out the principles you have already seen in this psalm?
5. As we move on to verses 121, look over these verses and make note of the psalmist’s requests. What does he ask for? What does this teach us about the Lord’s role in our pursuit of Him? What was the author’s role in all of this?
6. What does the author ask for in verse 125? How is this similar to what he asks for in verses 124, 130 and 144? Why is “understanding” so critical to spiritual wisdom and insight? How do we gain this understanding?
7. Taking what we’ve been talking about so far, what does the psalmist ask for in verse 133? How would the Lord answer this prayer? What does this require of the psalmist, so that he will actually receive this?
8. Look over verses 137-144. How does the author describe the Lord’s character? Why is it so important that we trust in God’s righteousness? Why does that matter for our daily lives?
9. How does the author view himself in verse 141? How do others view him? Have you ever felt this way? How does the psalmist demonstrate, in this psalm, that he has overcome this view?
