Bracteates are coin like metal medals stamped on only one side, usually worn as jewellery, found in Northern Europe, predominantly during the Migration Period of the Germanic Iron Age. Dr Ostergaard’s work focuses on the images depicted on Bracteates as art pieces, and her work reveals the pre-modern animist attitudes to concepts such as power, authority, gender, spirituality, the body, time, and space.
