The beginning of the NBA's 2022 free agency period begins June 30 and the Trail Blazers have real needs to upgrade the roster, re-sign important contributors and then scour the trade market. Here's everything you need to know to get you ready for Portland's massively important summer.
First the key dates of the offseason, how the free agent moratorium works and why the Blazers won't upgrade the roster using cap space.
No Cap Space, huh? Well the Blazers still have avenues to get better, including a couple small trade exceptions and the Non-Taxpayer Midlevel Exception, which is a ~$10.3 million contract that could help them lure the likes of Kyle Anderson, Thad Young, Chris Boucher, Mo Bamba or Isaiah Hartenstein to Portland.
Free agency isn't the only avenue for the Blazers this summer. We look at the roster to close the show and conclude the obvious: Some kind of trade is coming. The team is not good enough and not big enough to seriously compete for the playoffs as constructed. We run down the roster and look to get a sense of what the team's needs are before the offseason begins in earnest. It's a good episode.
